‘I strive to be seen as not what society molds me to become, but rather, seen for who I truly am’. Conformity comes at a price, and the taxes etched onto it are anything but light. With no shortage of lies percolating throughout society, the modern path of conformity leads in errant ways. We find ourselves chanting the ever-so-innocent incantations reverberated by mainstream media that elbow us into adopting certain habits that cater to the whole, but not to the specific. If we ever dare to be anxious, the conformist remedy is to distract ourselves by the ills that reside in our digital devices that I can vehemently argue are one of the worst, if not, the worst cultivation of the 21st century. Numbing is a new form of healing, according to society, treating a dire wound with a band-aid should do the trick, says every conformist.
There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that although the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on a plot of ground which is given to him to till. As the old saying goes, one cannot know if one does not try. Conformity has led us astray and we don't know where truth lies and the plot of land we were meant to till consists of, solitude is the perfect adjacent apothecary proven method used to mend that ever pervading wound. Be gone with the voices and opinions of others, and be with your own. Seek to challenge retrograde thinking that has done nothing but impede your latent potential and has used you to be another cog in the gargantuan machine that is society.
Solitude can help us understand who we are and what we want from life, there are voices which we hear in solitude that grow faint and inaudible as we enter into the world, says Emerson. He argues that being a nonconformist and being a recluse are not mutually exclusive, however I beg to differ. In my not-so-humble opinion, I believe that one in his true essence is found in complete isolation for an extended period of time, if one truncates this process he is met with influence from the outside and the results are now tainted and the journey dubbed as futile. Thus, one should seek to spend as much time in solitude without any and all distraction from the outside world, in hopes of achieving results foreign to even himself, about himself.
